Barium Sulfate

Barium sulfate (BaSO 4), is used as a weighting agent in drilling new oil wells. It is used to increase the density of petroleum and therefore prevents oil gushers. Gushers are undesirable, because they waste oil and can burn for months if ignited. Barium sulfate is added to the hole as it is drilled and it tends to mix with oil in the ground and form a very dense mixture that comes out much more slowly and under control. About 80% of the world’s barium sulfate production is used by the petroleum industry. Other areas where Barium sulfate is used are: Adding body to or as a coating for paper products, as a white
